Shaq picks up slack in Heat's win over Cavs

Basketball Betting Lines

02/26/2007 - Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Shaquille O'Neal picked up the slack in Dwyane Wade's absence, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to lead Miami past Cleveland, 86-81, at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Jason Kapono also posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards while Alonzo Mourning poured in 15 points off the bench for the Heat, who snapped a two-game slide.

Wade is sidelined indefinitely after dislocating his left shoulder in Wednesday's loss to Houston after getting tangled with Shane Battier of the Rockets early in the fourth quarter. The star guard is still weighing his medical options, with season-ending surgery a possibility.

"It was a balanced scoring game and we played good defense," O'Neal said. "We have to make every possession count. We know we were undermanned and understaffed a little bit. It gives us room for other guys to step up."

LeBron James finished with 29 points and seven assists and Larry Hughes scored 14 for Cleveland, which has lost two in a row.

"We had a lot of good drives, a lot of kick-outs for open looks, but we just could not knock them down," James said.

The Heat opened up the fourth quarter on a 12-3 run to break a tie and establish a 71-62 lead.

Kapono had four points in the surge, which Mourning capped with a hook shot.

Cleveland responded with five straight points to trim its deficit to four after a Donyell Marshall three-pointer, but Kapono answered with a jumper to halt the mini-run.

O'Neal then followed with back-to-back buckets -- a hook shot and a slam -- before Kapono drained a three-ball to push the advantage to 80-72 with 3:35 on the clock.

The Cavs got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Miami held a 41-38 edge at halftime, but Cleveland fought back to tie it at 59-59 after three quarters of play.

Game Notes

The Heat have won four of their last six meetings with the Cavaliers and nine in a row at home...Miami is 17-24 in games played without Wade since his rookie season, including 2-7 this year... Cleveland center Zydrunas Ilgauskas returned to the Cavaliers' starting lineup after missing four games for personal reasons. He finished with eight points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
