Paraguay eliminates unbeaten Kiwis, wins Group F

Soccer Betting Lines

06/24/2010 - Polokwane, South Africa (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Paraguay wrapped up first place in Group F on Thursday with a 0-0 tie against New Zealand at Peter Mokaba Stadium in the FIFA World Cup.

Paraguay was unbeaten in the group with a win and two draws, while New Zealand finished third and was eliminated despite not losing a match. The Kiwis earned draws in all three of their matches, but finished third behind Slovakia.

Slovakia eliminated defending World Cup champion Italy with a 3-2 win Thursday in the other match in Group F. Italy finished last in the group.

Paraguay plays the Group E runner-up on Tuesday in the round of 16. Slovakia plays the Group E winner on Monday in the round of 16.

Paraguay enjoyed far more possession in the opening 45 minutes, but the South American side did little with it. Paraguay did manage seven shots but put just one on target and it didn't trouble New Zealand goalie Mark Paston.

New Zealand managed just one shot in the opening half, but the Kiwis responded with a great chance less than five minutes into the second half. Simon Elliott found a poor clearance just outside the penalty area, but shot wide left.

Paraguay earned the first corner of the game in the 62nd minute, and it almost turned into the first goal. Claudio Morel Rodriguez played the corner kick to Denis Caniza on the top-right edge of the area and he slipped a second pass to Cristian Riveros.

Riveros fired through traffic from 12 yards, but Paston deflected the shot and New Zealand cleared over the end line for another corner kick. Paraguay failed to take advantage of the second opportunity, as the Kiwis again cleared.

Paraguay forced another fine save from Paston in the 76th after Oscar Cardozo chased down a pass on the left side and passed to Enrique Vera inside the box. Vera set up a right-footed shot, but Paston again deflected the effort and was saved by his defense as the Kiwis cleared with Lucas Barrios lurking.

Santa Cruz forced Paston to make another save minutes later on a long shot but it was only a half-chance. Barrios followed with another chance for Paraguay, but headed wide.

New Zealand substitute Chris Wood turned an effort off target in the 83rd, and Santa Cruz chipped a free kick to Barrios in the 85th but he couldn't convert.

The Kiwis had another chance in the closing five minutes, but Leo Bertos could not manage to sneak an 18-yard short through traffic and Paraguay cleared.

Paraguay had one last chance to end group play with a victory but Morel's free kick from 19 yards failed to create a shot on goal, as both squads ended the stage undefeated but with extremely different emotions.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
